Miguel Cotto vs Canelo Alvarez: Fighters Weigh In for Middleweight Clash
Canelo and Oscar are two different fighters and it is unfair to compare Canelo to Oscar right now considering all the incredible things Oscar has accomplished in his boxing career, but that will always happen in individual sports, especially with two men of Mexican descent.
Alvarez is a 3-1 favorite in a fight that will be closely watched by others in or near the middleweight division.
“It doesn’t matter if I landed 10 punches, but 10 well connected punches, and obviously not get hit by his punches”, said Alvarez.
“Let me talk to my team, let me talk to ‘Canelo, ‘ discuss how he’s feeling … we don’t know, we’ll see. And this is a flawless example of the best fighting the best”. He ranks right up there with all the great fighters in Puerto Rico’s decorated boxing history, including Felix Trinidad.
If Canelo Alvarez wants to hold onto his middleweight WBC belt he has to take on Gennady Golovkin in his next fight but there’s speculation he may dump the belt to give Cotto a rematch which might make him more money.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has two weeks before the deadline arrives for an important decision, so why tip his hand so soon after his fists were flying? But if you want me to fight him right now, I’ll fight him right now.
“This fight speaks for itself”. “I felt I was winning the fight”.
It’s probably just as well, because the fight was barely a middleweight bout anyway. Alvarez is insisting that Golovkin come down in weight for the fight to the 155-pound limit. The goal for both fighters is that they want to be the next pound for pound king.
“Is he going to fight Triple-G?” We are both going to fight. “Now it’s our job to bring them back”.
But first is Alvarez who despite his age has a formidable record of 45 wins and just one loss (to Mayweather) with 32 knockouts. Canelo said he loved seeing a packed weigh in, and promised a “great fight” tomorrow.
Miguel Cotto may not be the fighter that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was.
Miguel Cotto was a no-show at the post-fight press conference, so trainer Freddie Roach was the sole representative of Team Cotto. I think I could put Miguel in a very aggressive mode’.
The victor of Canelo-Golovkin could legitimately lay claim to the sport’s most important title of all: its glittery PPV crown.
Cotto had given up the WBC crown he won by beating Sergio Martinez a year ago due to a row over sanctioning fees, meaning the title was on the line for Alvarez only.
In the wake of Mayweather-Pacquiao this one is a tough sell.
In the end, this fight is shaping up to be a spectacle worth seeing.
