Mike Fiers pitches first Houston Astros no-hitter in 22 seasons
BREAKING: Mike Fiers throws a no-hitter as Astros beat Dodgers, 3-0. I got a feel for what he liked to do in certain situations and how he worked and what he was comfortable doing.
“My command was off a little early, but it felt great to come out and perform for the team”.
Former Astros manager Larry Dierker was once a Houston pitcher – and a good one at that. As a franchise, the Astros have thrown 11 no-hitters, with right-hander Darryl Kile recording the last individual no-hitter for Houston on September 8, 1993, against the New York Mets at the Astrodome.
Prior to that, Fiers had struck out five batters in a row stretching back to the seventh inning, two of them (lefties Ethier and Carl Crawford) on three pitches. The Houston Astros’ player payroll was less than a quarter of that on Opening Day. Cueto allowed six earned runs and 13 hits in six innings.
Adrian Gonzalez watched from the railing of the Dodgers dugout as Fiers was engulfed by his teammates against the backdrop of fireworks exploding outside of the retractable-roof stadium.
At Washington, most of the Brewers stayed in uniform after their 10-3 win to cheer for Fiers’ final outs.
MIAMI – Jerad Eickhoff prevailed in his major league debut, tossing six scoreless innings and hitting a two-run single to lead Philadelphia past Miami. “It’s been really nice for him to step into this situation and done what he has so far”. Jake Marisnick went yard with a man aboard in the second inning against Brett Anderson, and Evan Gattis tacked on a solo shot off of Anderson in the sixth. The 31-year-old owns a 4-1 career record versus Houston but didn’t look too dazzling in his last meeting, permitting three runs and five hits in three frames of a no-decision.
Dodgers: OF Yasiel Puig (right hamstring) ran before Friday’s game, and Mattingly said he expected Puig to play in this three-game series. Los Angeles’ offense has hit the skids in the last four contests, mustering just eight runs and 16 hits as the team saw its lead over second-place San Francisco in the National League West trimmed to 1 1/2 games.
