Mike Fiers throws fifth no-hitter in Majors this season
Then Ryan went down to the dugout to welcome the right-hander into a most fancy fraternity – the No-Hit Club.
He has that swing and miss stuff so it is no surprise that he was able to have such a dominant outing Friday night.
– Vincent Velasquez’s return happened at the right time.
“It was like a dream”, Fiers said. “Just pitch and do everything you’ve done before”.
“You can’t let one moment like that affect your career”, Fiers said. I had to get ready for summer ball to play in June. “The energy is not really what you’d like”. “But other than that, you know you’ve got to score and give yourself chances”.
“I think his best fastball might have been in the ninth with adrenaline pumping”, Hinch said.
London recovered to earn his 22nd save in 26 opportunities.
Francisco’s Chris Heston and Washington’s Max Scherzer also threw no-hitters this season. This was something else, though. He issued three walks and needed a career-high 134 pitches to finish what he started, surpassing his previous high of 113 with a called third strike on second baseman Enrique Hernandez for the second out in the eighth inning.
He was a 22nd-round pick by Milwaukee out of Nova Southeastern University in Florida in the 2009 amateur draft but made his big league debut a little more than two years later, in September 2011. “Nobody said anything to us during the game”. “Just go and get it”.
The closest the Dodgers came to breaking it up was in the sixth inning when Turner’s towering shot to left with two outs hooked foul.
“I talked to Stanton after that incident”, Fiers said. I dont think hed want to hurt anybody. Jose Altuve scored two of runs on a triple and a home run and Luis Valbuena also took Greinke deep.
“After all he has been through; no one deserves this more than Mike Fiers”, Cumberlands coach Brad Shelton said at the time, adding that Fiers was “such a hard worker, a great teammate and a leader for our pitching staff while he was here”.
Major League Baseball Network’s Heidi Watney announced during Friday night’s edition of Quick Pitch that Fiers is the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter after changing teams mid-season since Jim Bibby did so for the Texas Rangers in 1973.
Fiers has been a decent pitcher early in his career, but can be susceptible to the occasional stinker.
Jason Castro’s solo homer in the 10th inning lifted the Astros to a 3-2 victory that completed the sweep on Sunday. “It’s been really nice for him to step into this situation and done what he has so far”. 410 (16-for-39) with six doubles, one home run and five RBIs in 10 games since returning from the 15-day disabled list on August. 7.
In good hands, or so we thought, as Zack Greinke took his 13-2 record and 1.58 ERA to the mound for Los Angeles. The right-hander, however, is 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA in seven starts at home, where he last pitched July 29. In its last four games the LA offense has managed just eight runs and 16 hits and that coupled with their shaky bullpen has allowed the second-place Giants to move with 1.5 games in the West. The Astros (67-56) have won six of their last nine to bolster their lead over the second-place Angels to 4.5 games.
