Milestone! Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin Scores 500th Goal
He’s also the first Caps player to reach this milestone, and he’s the Russian top goal scorer in National Hockey League history by scoring his 485th career goals on November 19, outpacing former Russian star Sergei Fedorov (484 goals).
The goal, coming in the second period of the Capitals’ game against the Ottawa Senators, came in Ovechkin’s 801st career National Hockey League game.
Ovechkin got an extended standing ovation and took a lap around the rink, acknowledging the cheering crowd that included his parents.
In the aftermath of Alex Ovechkin’s 500th goal January 10, after the din and buzz and joy had slowly dissipated from a raucous Verizon Center, Capitals forward Justin Williams tried to wrap his mind around what his teammate had accomplished and how much there was still left to be said about one of the game’s greatest players. Mike Bossy netted his 500th in his 647th game at the age of 28, and and Brett Hull did it in 693 games at age 32.
Panthers 2, Oilers 1: EDMONTON, Alberta – Jaromir Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau scored in the first period, Al Montoya made 24 saves and Florida beat Edmonton to extend its franchise-record winning streak to 12 games. The next-most goals scored since the beginning of that season is Iginla’s 351. Last week, Ovechkin was named captain of the Metropolitan Division for the NHL All-Star Game.
He capped the week by scoring twice, including his 500th and 501st National Hockey League goals, in a 7-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.
Adam Henrique scored for New Jersey 1 minute, 21 seconds into the third period, but Minnesota’s Zach Parise got his 16th goal less than 2 minutes later.
Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist, and Nathan McKinnon also scored for Colorado.
Corey Crawford stopped 34 shots for the Blackhawks and Semyon Varlamov allowed four goals on 20 shots before he was replaced by Calvin Pickard, who stopped 13 of 15 shots in relief for the Avalanche. Forwards Mike Richards (conditioning) and Michael Latta (upper body) were scratches for Washington.
WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Marcus Foligno snapped a tie early in the third period with his third goal of the season to help spark Buffalo over Winnipeg.
