Miley Cyrus Advocates Against BC’s Wolf Cull
Miley Cyrus has waded into the BC wolf cull controversy, and she’s on the side of the grey wolf.
“Most people don’t wish for their website to crash, but that was a good crash”, she said, adding that Pacific Wild’s site went down due to a surge of traffic about two hours after Cyrus posted her plea on Instagram.
“Habitat recovery continues to be an important part of caribou recovery, but can not address the critical needs of these herds in the short term”, the government said in a statement in April, according to the CBC.
Eighty-four wolves were shot and killed by helicopter hunters during the program’s first phase last winter, reports The Globe and Mail.
On Tuesday night, Cyrus called upon her Instagram followers to take action by signing a petition against Canada’s massive wolf cull.
Cyrus echoed McAllister’s comments and has been actively debating if wolves are the problem with her followers.
“It’s making the wolves pay with their lives for land mismanagement for decades”, says Michaela Montaner, a spokesperson for Pacific Wild, a Canadian conservation nonprofit.
The provincial government approved the hunt earlier this year in South Selkirks and South Peace regions because it said wolves were preying on caribou herds with declining populations.
Despite the criticism and social media backlash, some B.C. officials say the cull will be effective over time.
“This unscientific and unethical wolf cull is a outcome of oil and gas development, and industrial logging, which have endangered woodland caribou”.
The cull, which began January 2015, is expected to run for at least five years.
More than 195,000 people have signed Pacific Wild’s petition so far.
“We obviously want to deliver the petition to Christie Clark, our premier here in British Columbia, and really emphasize the level of public concern around this”, Montaner said. The campaign is being led by Pacific Wild, a B.C. conservation group.
