Militant extremists ignored contact attempts by wife in CA shooting
As federal authorities attempt to piece together the circumstances surrounding last week’s terrorist attack in San Bernardino, their far-flung investigation has taken them as far away as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
Navy SEALs who shot Osama Bin Laden in the same year stressed that his body was washed and wrapped in sheets as Islamic law dictates before his remains were buried at sea.
Marquez has acknowledged that he bought the two AR-15s for Farook several years ago.
He said the investigation is continuing. “We’re also working very hard to understand whether there was anybody else invlolved with assisting them, with supporting them, with equipping them”, he added.
Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook were photographed at O’Hare Airport in July 2014.
The FBI said it is treating the mass shooting as an act of terrorism, citing the couple’s declaration that they were acting on behalf of the militant group Islamic State, as well as a large cache of weapons, ammunition and bomb-making materials seized in the investigation.
Since he was a child growing in a single-level beige home here in Riverside, Mr. Marquez fastened himself to Mr. Farook and his family.
The search of the lake, which could last for days, stemmed from an unspecified lead “indicating that the subjects came into this area” on the day of the attack, said David Bowdich, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office. Marquez remains in custody and is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to officials.

Mr Marquez and Farook “were plotting an actual attack” that year, including buying weapons, but became apprehensive and shelved the plan because of law enforcement activity and arrests in the area, said Idaho senator Jim Risch, a Republican who sits on the Senate select committee on intelligence.
Authorities said Farook dropped off the couple’s 6-month-old daughter with his mother prior to the morning shooting, saying he and his wife had a doctor’s appointment. Authorities believe the marriage was faked in an attempt to help the woman stay in the U.S. Marquez told FBI investigators that he and Farook plotted a terror attack in 2012, but shelved the plans after four people were arrested and charged in a plot to commit jihad against U.S. military bases overseas, according to ABC News.
Farook, a USA citizen, and his Pakistani-born wife, opened fire December 2 at a holiday luncheon attended by many of Farook’s co-workers in the San Bernardino health department.
Velasco worked as an environmental health specialist at the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, which was holding a holiday party when the shooting erupted.
“You look where the terror is going to come from, and right now, it is going to come from the Muslim community”, he said.
When asked about Farook, she said her son was friends with him and “nothing more”.
Marquez said he had nothing to do with devices found at the home of Farook and Malik, or the ones that apparently failed to go off at the site of the shooting, the officials said. But since the attack they have determined the couple discussed martyrdom and jihad online as early as 2013.
If Malik’s body is still unclaimed in a month’s time, then officials will cremate it at the taxpayer’s expense, in accordance with state law.
