Military aircraft collide off Waialua; search on for survivors
The Coast Guard is leading a search off the Hawaiian island of Oahu after reports that two Marine helicopters had collided.
A debris field was located about 2.5 miles north of Haleiwa, Chief Petty Officer Sara Mooers tells CBS.
A total of 12 Marines onboard the two helicopters were on a night time training mission when they were crashed mid-air. There were six personnel on each helicopter, according to the report.
The Coast Guard is searching the debris with assistance from a Navy helicopter crew and the Honolulu Fire Department with a helicopter and rescue boat on scene. The two aircraft are believed to be helicopters, Mooers also said.
The area is forecast to have 10 to 15 foot waves, with rapid building to 30 to 40 feet Friday morning.
