Millers rebuffed by Walsall
In a statement, the Saddlers have confirmed a request from a Championship club to speak to Smith was “categorically rejected”.
Smith, 44, had been lined up to come in as successor to Steve Evans following his departure last week.
Though the club is not named, it is understood to be the Millers.
After Walsall’s rejection, former Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn remains the leading contender for the Rotherham job while Hibs’ Alan Stubbs could also feature on Tony Stewart’s short list.
And the West Midlands club have therefore stressed they have no interest in allowing the 44-year-old to leave.
Rotherham United are believed to have had an approach to speak to Walsall boss Dean Smith turned down.
Walsall fans, do you think you will keep hold of Smith?
He has guided Walsall to their current second place in League One.
‘As one of the longest serving managers in the country, Dean has been instrumental in the club’s progress since his appointment and is fundamental to our future plans’.
‘This approach was categorically rejected.
Meanwhile, Rotherham, who have first-team coach Eric Black in caretaker charge of playing affairs, have been boosted by the return to training of experienced midfielder Paul Green who has recovered from an ankle problem.
