Million Dollar Bond Set For Ohio Officer
He was arraigned in DuBose’s murder on Thursday and the judge set his bond at $1 million.
At the arraignment, which took place at the Hamilton County courthouse, some of the people present in the courtroom began applauding after Judge Megan Shanahan set Tensing’s bail at $1 million. In statements to police, Tensing said he feared for his life and only shot Dubose after he was “dragged” by the victim’s auto.
“The case will be tried and decided in court”, he said, as reported by TIME.
The July 19 death of 43-year-old Samuel DuBose in Cincinnati, Ohio, US, comes amid months of national scrutiny of police dealings with African-Americans, especially those killed by officers. But authorities have not focused on race as a factor in the slaying. Then the video becomes shaky, but a gunshot can be heard and Mr DuBose appears to be slumped in the seat before the auto rolls away, coming to a stop at a nearby corner.
The entire proceeding only last five minutes, but symbolically it showed the community that in this case of a white cop shooting a black driver, a body cam showing what happened will help find the truth quickly.
Tensing was released from jail later yesterday, according to the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts.
Representatives from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department told the Cincinnati television station WCPO that the 25-year-old officer left the jail at about 6:45 p.m. on Thursday.
As the New York Times reports, prosecuting attorney Joseph T. Deters thought the video was crucial evidence in the determination of the trial, demonstrating that police body cameras can have major effect on policing and citizens’ rights.
Deters said Dubose “was subdued”, adding that Tensing had his licence plate number. Two other university officers who responded to the scene-Kidd and Eric Weibel-have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. This is the most asinine act I’ve ever seen a police officer make – totally unwarranted.
A video recorded on a cell phone showing the arrest of Sandra Bland during a traffic stop and shared on social media contradicted official reports that she was combative toward police.
Three of these officers were charged for shooting people during or after traffic stops, which can be tense encounters for police and drivers alike.
Tensing had been a police officer for four years before he was fired by the University of Cincinnati.
Deters also said the university should hand policing duties over to the city.
Police have not yet addressed the footage from the second officer, but Deters says the video shows “absolutely nothing”. His attorney previously told WLWT in Cincinnati that family members were working to come up with the bond. Deters said.
