Some 20 miles (30 km) north of Miami, the Fort Lauderdale airport is near cruise line terminals at Port Everglades.
In November, Santiago turned up at an Federal Bureau of Investigation office in his hometown of Anchorage, Alaska, claiming that the government was “controlling his mind” and was forcing him to watch so-called “Islamic State” (IS) videos.
Police said Santiago, 26, traveled to the Florida airport with the gun and ammunition in his checked luggage.
The gunman who fatally shot five people and wounded eight others in Fort Lauderdale’s airport sent panicked passengers running out of the terminal and onto the tarmac with bags in hand. He was born in New Jersey and grew up in Puerto Rico.
President Obama said on Friday he was “heartbroken” for the families of victims of the Fort Lauderdale shooting, giving his first comments on the tragedy in an interview with ABC News. “We continue to look at all avenues, all motives for this attack”. He claimed his bag and took the gun from baggage and went into the bathroom to load it. After emptying about 3 magazines of bullets, the shooter then got down on the ground, spread-eagled and waited for police to arrive.
Bryan Santiago told NBC News that his brother had served in the Army National Guard in Puerto Rico for six years and was deployed to Iraq for about a year in 2010.
