Milo Yiannopoulos of Breitbart Banned by Twitter After Actress Attacked
“Some people are going to find this perfectly acceptable”, he said.
Yiannopoulos’ Twitter account, which had more than 388,000 followers, was blocked sometime later. The microblogging site’s decision follows accusations that Yiannopoulos incited his followers to send abusive tweets to Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones.
The “Ghostbusters” actress found herself the target of many offensive and hurtful posts, which were mainly directed at the colour of her skin.
“This type of abusive behavior is not permitted on Twitter, and we’ve taken action on numerous accounts reported to us by both Leslie and others”, said a spokesperson for Twitter.
It continued: “Over the past 48 hours in particular, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of accounts violating these policies and have taken enforcement actions against these accounts, ranging from warnings that also require the deletion of Tweets violating our policies to permanent suspension”.
“We rely on people to report this type of behavior to us, but we are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to prevent this kind of abuse”. The details on changes are expected in “the coming weeks”.
He also was accused of sharing racist tweets from an account purported to belong to Jones, according to screenshots in news articles. In the review, he called Jones’ character a ” flat-as-a-pancake black stylings”.
Even among that level of animosity, though, plenty of users came to Jones’ defense. “If you chase people offline with racist and intimidating speech, that’s too much”.
On Breitbart’s website, Yiannopoulos issued his own statement, condemning Twitter for its “cowardly” move and saying the site was targeting him because of his conservative beliefs.
Her call didn’t go unanswered.
In an interview with Business Insider at his Republican National Convention party on Tuesday night, Yiannopoulos slammed Twitter cofounder and CEO Jack Dorsey.
At the time, it was unclear what action, exactly, had been taken.
When asked whether he would fight the ban, Yiannopoulos said that he had a plan.
Permanent bans on Twitter were borne out of the company’s ongoing effort to tame the unruly masses of anonymous tormentors whose threats and ugly commentary have always been a major liability for the social platform.
Earlier this week, the Breitbart tech editor urged a slew of hateful reactions against Jones that ultimately forced the actress to quit Twitter to avoid further abuse. “Where are the Twitter police when Justin Bieber’s fans cut themselves on his behalf?”
“He just sent a very clear message to the entire user base of Twitter, which is if you believe in mischief and dissidence and fun and free speech, you’re not welcome on Twitter”.
Fans of Yiannopoulos – including many who side with his anti-feminist stance on Gamergate – got #FreeMilo trending on Twitter Tuesday night.
