Milwaukee Bucks Give Golden State Warriors First Loss Of Season, 108-95
Golden State’s Australian centre Andrew Bogut struggled to contain his Milwaukee counterpart, Greg Monroe, who made 11 of his 16 field-goal attempts for 28 points.
Less than 24 hours after winning a double-overtime thriller against the Boston Celtics (14-10) on Friday night, the Golden State Warriors (24-1) fell 105-98 on the road to the Milwaukee Bucks (10-15) on Saturday to end their unbeaten streak at 28 games going back to last season (started 24-0 in 2015). The impossible, improbable, unprecedented winning streak is finally over as Steph Curry and the Warriors were thoroughly and convincingly vanquished by the unlikely Milwaukee Bucks, 108-95.
In a unusual twist of flashback fate, the Bucks were also the team that ended the Lakers’ streak with a 120-104 victory on January 9, 1972.
Golden State’s Stephen Curry had 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the field, including 2 of 8 from three-point territory.
The Bucks ran as much as they could, converting 10 of 13 shots in transition. They are now responsible for ending the two longest winning streaks in National Basketball Association history.
“Losing sucks even if you are 24-1”, said Warriors interim head coach Luke Walton of the loss to the lowly Bucks.
It wasn’t the team you expected to beat the champs. And if the Warriors’ track record of dominance at home is any indication, they’ll likely come out locked in and ready to go when the Bucks hit the hardwood in the Bay Area. “No one shuts us down”, the Warriors guard said after the game via Bay Area News Group’s Diamond Leung. Reserve guard Marcus Thornton scored 18 points as Houston (12-12) won for the seventh time in nine games.
While Harden scored a game-high 30 points, Howard added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Golden State was poised to become the first of those teams to come home 7-0, but you could see the gears starting to grind.
The first half was a slog for the Warriors in every way, and Milwaukee’s energized demeanor compounded Golden State’s issues.
Tired and depleted after a 13-day road trip, which tied the longest in franchise history, the team can now focus on getting healthy and getting better, rather than scoring more points than the other guys night after night.
Both teams have played a lot of games recently, as this was the second of a back-to-back for both teams.
“Emotions were definitely high”, said Carter-Williams, who finished with 17 points, five assists and five steals.
Friday’s thriller may have sapped the Warriors’ energy but Boston showed no ill effects as they beat the Charlotte Hornets 98-93 to close to within one win of Atlantic Division leaders the Toronto Raptors.
The Warriors trailed 59-48 at halftime after shooting 2 of 13 from 3-point range.
Forward Draymond Green said he feels like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders now that the streak is over.
