‘Minecraft’ Movie Finds Director in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Actor
The team at Mojang in charge of Minecraft is announcing that it is choosing to work with Rob McElhenney, who is best known for his work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, on the coming movie based on the video game. “He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie”, Bui wrote in the blog post.
McElhenney has yet to direct a feature film, but one way or another, that’s about to change.
Minecraft, the runaway smash computer game where players build (and destroy) structures and environments using 3D blocks, has been on its way to the big screen for a few years now.
Make Mac proud and give this bit of good news an ocular pat-down. His only experience as a director to this point has been on two early episodes of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and a pilot for an FX series called Pariah starring Bill Burr. The LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee was assigned to oversee the project for the studio and Jill Messick is co-producing.
Though he may seem like a way-out-of-left-field pick for the gig, the star is a passionate professional who has successfully pitched his own projects in the past, and that may have been the case here.
No word on whether McElhenney will also be writing the Minecraft movie, but you could bet that he will also be handling screenwriting duties in some capacity.
Minecraft will be produced by Warner Bros. and has no set release date.
