Minneapolis Police Say 5 Shot Near Protest Scene
Minneapolis Black Lives Matter protesters paused on Thursday to share a community Thanksgiving Day meal on the spot outside a police station where they have been demonstrating for more than a week over the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black man.
Programs also adorned with a photo of Clark described the 24-year-old as a man who “liked to swim, fish, listen to music, play basketball, be with family and take trips to Charlotte, North Carolina”. Three white men have been taken into custody in relation to the shooting-Allen Lawrence “Lance” Scarsella III, Nathan Gustavsson and Daniel Macey. A Hennepin County District Court Judge has granted the county attorney’s office until Monday at noon to making a charging decision on the suspects.
On Wednesday, hundreds of mourners turned out for Jamar Clark’s funeral at Shiloh Temple International Ministries.
Millions March NYC and NYC Shut It Down – both of which are part of the Black Lives Matter movement decrying police violence against African-Americans – held a rally beginning around 6:30 pm in Washington Square Park.
Fourteen people whom protesters believed to be white supremacists were kicked out of the area one recent night, said Mica Grimm, an organizer of Black Lives Matter Minneapolis.
“The family of Jamar Clark has been traumatized by the violent manner of his loss, the absence of information or explanation for the shooting and the challenge of navigating their grief amid the glare of media attention and among competing political agendas”, Steven Belton, the league’s interim president, said in a statement.
Tensions rose further on Monday when five protesters were shot and wounded near the police station. “The shooting of five black men at a protest focused on racial equity should be investigated as a hate crime”.
Some protesters criticized the police response time and said officers arrived in full riot gear. The story of Tuesday night, they say, was not that protesters managed to remain peaceful, but that they managed not to retaliate against continued police provocation. To a standing ovation, Howell said: “Jamar, your life did and does have goal”.
The documents say the 23-year-old suspect, who is white, told the officer that he and some friends went to the protest to livestream it when the altercation broke out, leading to the shooting. At other times, they danced, sang and chanted, “No justice, no peace, prosecute the police”.
Shots were fired early Wednesday morning near the scene of a Minneapolis protest for the second night in a row.
However, they also want videos shot during the shooting to be released, but state and federal authorities refuse. Attempts by Reuters to reach family members of the four men arrested in that case were not successful. Clark’s older brother, James Hill, said Hodges sent her condolences for not attending the funeral adding that he wanted her to hold the officers accountable.
Black Lives Matter’s Facebook page indicates protesters are concerned about food security after threats to put rat poison in donated food.
Clark was shot by police at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15 outside of an apartment on the 1600 block of Plymouth Avenue N. Officers were responding to a request for assistance from paramedics who reported that Jamar Clark was disrupting their ability to aid an assault victim. The cops come prepared to arrest people who are protesting. One video showed a white man brandishing a gun while claiming to be on his way to the protests.
Several videos have been examined, but state authorities say they do not show the entire incident. Clark, whose death in a confrontation with police, has sparked more than a week of protests.
