Minor league player named AHL MVP
Once it was decided that it would be Scott’s Pacific against the Atlantic in the final, there came this tweet from Atlantic goaltender Roberto Luongo: “Might have to put Bergeron on Scott in the final to have a chance to win this thing”. Scott was elected as captain of the Pacific Division while with the Arizona Coyotes.
Music City waited 18 years to host the NHL All-Star game. He obviously has no business being in the game, based on what he has done this season (one assist, 25 penalty minutes in 11 games) or his career (5 goals, 6 assists, 11 points and 542 penalty minutes in 285 games). I can’t put this into words.
“You can’t really write this stuff”, he told Cohn.
Scott also had a bit of fun with leading goal scorer Patrick Kane, checking him before Kane went on to score at the other end and then dropping the gloves to start a mock fight.
It isn’t every day that a player with the reputation of John Scott gets such wide-spread admiration, but the hockey community works in amusing ways sometimes. Teammates lifted him on their shoulders while fans chanted “MVP!” and then Scott was announced as the victor and presented with a Honda Pilot Touring SUV. He also posed with teammates behind their $1 million check. But I think a 3-on-3 format, if you’re not trying you’re going to be pinpointed, so I think everyone was definitely trying… “Yeah, nerve wracking, especially (since) Burnzie is such a spaz”.
I used to try hard to avoid anything having to do with All-Star games except for baseball. That was the most time I’d spent watching the game in years. This time, these All-Stars combined for 116 shots and 23 goals.
And it was finally requited: Scott, whose All Star trip had once been blocked, scored two goals to help the Pacific team win the All-Star 3-on-3 tournament (and a $1 million prize). More importantly, the players were thrilled to have Scott there. The winners of the first two games advanced to a third-period championship.
The first 20 minutes was the Metropolitan team against the Atlantic team.
Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks eventually won the tournament for Team Pacific, but Scott called the whole experience surreal.
Five times since 1995 the league has had no game at all, either because it had to cancel it due to one of the league’s many lockouts, or because the NHL’s participation in the Winter Olympics since 1998 stopped the season for two weeks and took away the game.
Not bad, considering Scott officially plays for the St. John’s IceCaps, the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens.
The game came one night after the highly entertaining All-Star skills competition, which starred Brent Burns in a Chewbacca mask and P.K. Subban dressed as Jaromir Jagr – while the real Jagr looked on. His wife is about to give birth to twins and he already has two daughters.
The Pacific Conference beat the Atlantic Conference, 1-0, in the 2016 All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016 in Nashville, Tenn.
She said this has been overwhelming.
“And he is kind of different, and people love it. He’s different the right way, the good way – It’s good for the fans, they were loving that”.
