Miss Arkansas nabs crown and title at Miss America pageant
Shields was crowned the new Miss America at the conclusion of the live finals Sunday night in Atlantic City.
The “talent” portion was also thankfully free of any freakish choices, like last year’s Miss New York playing the solo cup, like she was starring in her own live version of Pitch Perfect III: Miss America! and the rest of us merely extras.
When she was crowned the first openly gay Miss Missouri in June, O’Flaherty told reporters: ‘I don’t know that I meant to be the first but I am, so I’m very excited about it’.
Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian played on his name and that of the new Miss America in promoting his city.
The rest of the top 15 finalists came from California, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
Miss South Carolina Rachael Wyatt was named first runner-up, and was awarded a $25,000 scholarship.
For the talent portion of the contest Shields performed a jazz dance to a song from the TV series “Smash”.
She was the first openly lesbian contestant to win a state title. When asked about Hillary Clinton during the interview portion of the competition, Savvy instead chose to address Hillary and Donald Trump with the claim that while they have both done well thus far, “they also need to watch what they’re doing”. She impressed the judges with her thoughts on the Democratic nominee for president, Hillary Clinton, in the Q&A round.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Alicia Cooper, a 22-year-old from Clark County, Washington, was third runner up Sunday night in the Miss America pageant.
“Through every major milestone of our nation’s evolution, Miss America has provided a voice for women from all walks of life…”
“Our country was founded on compromise”, she said.
This year’s pageant stood out for including the first-ever openly homosexual contestant, Erin O’Flaherty (Miss Missouri). After the show, Shields told reporters that she believes the presidential candidates and political parties need to start compromising.
