Already in the midst of her winner’s walk, newly crowned and wearing the Miss Universe sash, Gutierrez’s celebration was cut short when Harvey walked out onto the stage and announced that her win had been an error.

The host of the Miss Universe beauty contest says he feels “terrible” for accidentally handing the crown to the runner up.

“I was confused. I wasn’t sure what was going on”, Wurtzbach told ET after her unprecedented pageant upset.

Ms Wurtzbach said she tried to approach Aravelo onstage afterward, but the Colombian was crying and surrounded by a crowd of women.

Harvey originally said Miss Colombia had won when, in fact, it was Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

A Reuters report quoted Wurtzbach commenting after the show, “It’s a very non-traditional crowning moment”.

The nearly unbelievable ending to the pageant was televised live in many countries, including on the Fox network in the United States on Sunday night. Again it was an honest mistake.

Harvey later deleted the erroneous tweet, posting another apology with the nations spelled correctly: “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake”.

The Miss Universe organization issued a statement on Sunday night for the mix-up without placing blame on any particular individual.

NBC Universal and Donald Trump co-owned the Miss Universe Organisation until earlier this year.
