Miss Universe host’s mistake initially gives crown to Colombia, not Philippines
In case you missed it (which, thanks to YouTube, we’re pretty sure you haven’t at this point), the host of the highly-anticipated pageant accidentally read the wrong name as the Miss Universe victor, crowing Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez rather than the actual victor Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Our sincerest apologies to Miss Universe Colombia 2015, Ariadna Gutierrez-Arévalo, Miss Universe Philippines 2015, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, their families and fans.
During a Monday interview on NBC “TODAY” Trump suggested that it would be “very cool” to have the Miss Universe crown be shared between the victor and runner-up in the wake of the incident in a “beautiful ceremony” and stood up for Harvey.
Miss Colombia for Miss Congeniality?
Within seconds of Gutierrez being crowned, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos took to Twitter to commemorate what appeared to be an unprecedented back-to-back Miss Universe win for the South American nation.
It could have been two Miss Universe titles in a row for Colombia but soon after Guiterrez took her first walk as the victor, the host admitted to have made a mistake in announcing the winners. “I have to apologize”, he said, while standing next to Arevalo. When it was time to announce this year’s tiara-holder, host Steve Harvey emphatically announced “Miss Universe 2015 is…”
Some journalists blamed Donald Trump, saying they could find no financial record confirming that he had indeed sold the rights to the pageant as he said he did in September.
The new Miss Universe admitted she’s “still in awe of everything”, and that she half expects the tiara to be taken away from her, too.
A message from Miss Universe Colombia. I will take responsibility for this. IMG earlier this year.
Smith might have been shocked, but he definitely felt bad Harvey.
“If you still owned it, and you were sitting there when this happened, what would Donald Trump have done?” News of the error spread rapidly on social media, with the #MissUniverse2015 hashtag trending. “Sounds like a big PUBLICITY STUNT to get everyone talking about Miss Universe, when normally (let’s be honest, now!) NO ONE would be talking about Miss Universe”. “The photos are there to prove it. To me, as a Colombian, she is still Miss Universe”, he added.
