Miss Universe host Steve Harvey names wrong winner of pageant
Organizers of Miss Universe 2015 apologized on Monday (December 21) for initially announcing Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez-Arévalo as the victor of this year’s pageant instead of Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
The real victor was Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who looked astonished by the sudden turn of events.
“What happened to the girl from Colombia was devastating”, Trump said Monday.
The crown was then taken off Arevalo’s head and placed directly onto Wurtzbach’s.
Harvey then displayed the card to the cameras to show that he messed up the names.
Harvey said later no one felt worse than he did about his mistake. He even showed a copy of the cue card showing the exact results. I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night. “It was my mistake”.
Outgoing Miss Universe Paulina Vega, ironically also from Colombia, fulfilled the dubious obligation of removing the crown and placing it on the rightful victor.
The response on the Internet was swift and unkind.
Harvey and the Miss Universe Organization have since apologized for the mistake.
He announces a new victor: “Miss Universe 2015 is Miss Philippines!”.
But billionaire property tycoon and Republican US presidential hopeful Trump offended Hispanics in June when he made anti-immigrant remarks in announcing his Republican presidential run. I have to apologise’. “Listen folks let me take charge of this”, Harvey said.
There were as many as 80 contestants vying for the coveted Miss Universe title in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Speaking to the press, Wurtzbach was gracious about the incident, saying backstage that it had been “a very non-traditional crowning moment…it is very 2015”, Reuters reported.
Miss Columbia celebrated for a good few minutes, before TV presenter Steve acknowledged his mistake and informed a shock crowd, and contestants, that he had got it wrong.
