Miss Universe: Miss Colombia’s gracious response after being mistakenly crowned victor
Comedian Steve Harvey found himself in a world of controversy and conspiracy theories after he wrongfully announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez Arévalo as the victor of Miss Universe 2015 Sunday night at Planet Hollywood hotel-casino in Las Vegas.
As televised on Fox, the contest was down to Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo of Colombia and Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines when Harvey, a first-time Miss Universe host, proclaimed Gutierrez the victor after a long dramatic pause. The real trouble came when Steve misread his cue card and said that Miss Columbia Ariadna Gutierrez Areval was the victor when in fact she was first runner up to the REAL victor, Miss Phillippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach!
Even Juan Manuel Santos, the president of Colombia, chimed in to say how very proud of Miss Colombia he was, and he tweeted that Gutierrez is still Colombia’s Miss Universe.
The Miss Universe contestant from the Philippines is this year’s victor but for one brief moment, it appeared as if it might be a repeat win for Colombia. The handsome lady obviously got very happy but her happiness was short lived as Harvey corrected his mistake the very next minute. She said: “Everything happens for a reason. Are you going to take the crown from me now?'” she added.
‘Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well, ‘ he wrote in a separate tweet.
Harvey read the card wrong, confuses the verdict and announces Miss Colombia as the victor.
Radulovic, who belonged to the pageant’s top five, said that she felt “terrible” for Gutierrez and Wurtzbach.
“The prompter said ‘Miss Universe – Colombia, ‘” Harvey told a producer while waving his hands on the seven-second video, according to the New York Daily News.
Wurtzbach is the third Filipina to be crowned Miss Universe, ending a 42-year drought for the country.
However, she wasn’t watching the pageant when the wrong victor was announced.
