“Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation” Conquers Weekend Box Office
Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” dominated the U.S. box office this weekend with an impressive $56 million at 3,956 locations.
John Woo’s outrageous ‘Mission: Impossible II’ still holds the opening record ($57.8 million) for Tom Cruise’s spy franchise, but right behind it is ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’.
In the US the action film took 56 million dollars (£35.9 million).
“Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation” was originally set to be released in December, but Paramount decided that July is a lot better to avoid the premieres of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “James Bond: Spectre“.
It’s nearly 20 years after the original Mission: Impossible debuted in theatres in 1996, and Tom Cruise has proven he still carries plenty of star power.
However, the news wasn’t almost as good for the attempted resurrection of another formerly successful franchise: Vacationdebuted to a disappointing $14.9 million for the Thursday-Sunday stretch, although the movie’s total is is increased to $21.2 million if we go as far back as Wednesday, its opening day.
It follows the next generation of the Griswold family, played by Ed Helms (from “The Hangover” films), Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann and others.
For the first time in eight weeks, there’s no “Jurassic World” news to report this weekend.
An estimated 53 percent of the audience was female, and 52 percent was younger than 35.
Ant-Man continues its healthy performance, earning another $12.6 million for a total of $132 million, while Minions added $12.2 million to its now-$287.4 million gross.
The already released Ant-Man, Minions and Pixels rounded out the top five. Nonetheless, the latest M.I. movie has also hit internationally.
In seventh was “Southpaw“, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer at the end of his bruising career, which brought in US$7.5 million. Its IMAX screening also grossed $8.4 million domestically and $4.1 Million overseas, Comingsoon.net reported.
“Assassination” dropped down a place to second over the weekend due to the strength of the Hollywood blockbuster, but remains a box office sensation with an accumulated audience of more than 6 million. Last year’s same weekend saw Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” rake in $94.3 million in its opening.
