Mississippi State set to face Auburn and new QB White
The most accomplished starting quarterback in the Southeastern Conference will match up with the newest member of that group. Auburn is 2-1, coming off a blowout loss to LSU.
August 30, 2014; Auburn, AL, US; Auburn Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn talks to an official during the second half against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Jordan Hare Stadium. MSU’s last victory on the road in the series came in 2007 when Sylvester Croom was still the team’s coach.
The victor still will have a chance to compete for the SEC Western Division title, while the loser more than likely will be out of the picture. Auburn will be without one of its best players indefinitely.
White said he called his father, Don, soon after Malzahn made the announcement. All we’re thinking about is Mississippi State and that’s the way we’re going to operate. We’re hopeful that we’ll get him back before the season’s out.
The Bulldogs have closed games strong so far, outscoring opponents 34-3 in the fourth quarter. Can Auburn stop Dak Prescott? Junior running back Brandon Holloway has 92 yards rushing, but he hasn’t rushed for a score. September 22, 2015, he is benching a struggling Jeremy Johnson and switching to Sean White starting in Saturday night’s game against Mississippi State. Johnson was billed in the preseason as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate but has thrown six interceptions in three games.
“You have to do what you feel is best for your team and your offense each week”, Malzahn said. “He’s got a lot of reps the last two years too”. “He’s got that little air of confidence that quarterbacks have”.
Trent Dilfer called Auburn redshirt freshman Sean White, a former pupil whom he coached at Elite 11 camp in 2013, a “program changer”.
It’s not the ideal first start in the SEC for White, but Malzahn believes in him. The Bulldogs are third in the conference with eight sacks. We feel like that is the best for the offense right now. The Bulldogs are allowing only 20.9 percent conversions (9-of-43).
“Sean is a guy that we have felt good about for a long time”, Malzahn said.
“It doesn’t change our game plan at all really“, Mullen said.
In last year’s Orange Bowl, the Bulldogs had 605 yards of offense. The week performances by Auburn in those games, and the one against LSU, is the motivation behind the change at quarterback. LSU drove for 486 total yards of offense to Auburn’s 260. He was 15-of-19 passing for 109 yards in the Tigers’ spring game. “You have to make the best of your opportunities”. I guess Gus needs to lower that arm because his face says it’s stinky in here. He also provided tornado relief to people of Louisville.
“Sean’s our starter for this game”.
