Missouri beat U-Conn. after Huskies tried the worst fake FG ever
Anthony Sherrils picked it off to prevent the easy first down.
“Doesn’t matter who they are or whether one is ranked and one is not ranked, everybody always expects to win”, linebacker Matt Walsh said.
“I think we have been going as a team, we have learned a lot in the last two games”, Vechery said.
Added Missouri coach Gary Pinkel: “Anthony comes up and makes a great play”.
Entering the game to a big applause from the home crowd, Lock drove the Tigers into Connecticut territory for the first time, but the series fizzled when Ish Witter was stopped behind the line on a third-and-short run.
UConn coach Bob Diaco did not think there was cause for concern with how many times Villanova and Army players were able to run into the backfield untouched. It was fitting in that Missouri’s defense iced the win after another dominant effort, together with three stops on one extended collection alone by Connecticut within the 1st half.
Huskies quarterback Bryant Shirreffs completed 17-of-26 passes for 156 yards, with seven catches for 86 yards going to wideout Noel Thomas. The Huskies were 1 of 3 on fourth-down plays, converting on a 13-yard run by Justin Wain off a fake punt.
Charles Harris added three tackles for Missouri, including two for loss and a sack.
Maty Mauk scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter to provide the margin of victory.
Thus ended a game in which both offenses struggled mightily throughout.
It was an ugly game from the start.
Brothers came into the game as the nation’s leading tackler and added 10 more to his total.
Missouri took advantage of the field position, and promptly started marching the ball down the field.
Mauk said he is still developing a feel for the pocket.
The Huskies’ only touchdown came after a turnover by Mauk.
“I didn’t want to put it on (kicker) Michael (Tarbutt) at that point”.
Missouri opens its Southeastern Conference schedule against Kentucky on September 26 in Lexington.
