Missouri Governor Eric Greitens resigns amid sex scandal
“While corruption ended Eric Greitens’ career as a politician, his schemes to slash workers’ pay and rip healthcare away from vulnerable seniors continue to hurt Missourians”, he said.
“While I cannot force Mr. Greitens to take personal accountability for his actions, there are things I can do”, she said.
Greitens said the decision to resign was a hard one, but maintained that he’s done nothing wrong.
The announcement comes one day after the governor announced he’s resigning.
The resignation will take effect at 5 p.m. on Friday, Greitens said.
May 18 – State lawmakers convene a special session to consider whether to initiate impeachment proceedings against Greitens.
Martin says he expects that case will be resolved soon as well.
Gardner said in a statement that the last several months have been hard.
February 22 – A grand jury in St. Louis indicts the governor on a felony invasion of privacy charge for taking and transmitting the alleged photo. That case has since been handed off to a special prosecutor, Jean Peters Baker of Jackson County.
He has also been accused of misusing a charity donor list during his scandal-plagued term.
The state legislature’s investigation had expanded to probe potential campaign finance violations, as questions swirled about whether the governor’s campaign illegally coordinated with a non-profit organization to hide the identity of political donors.
The 44-year-old governor spent almost five months fighting to stay in office after the affair became public in January in a television news report that aired immediately following his State of the State address. Dave Schatz stopped short of calling for the resignation, but questioned his ability to effectively lead.
The blackmail allegations were only the start of the scandal-laden months to follow, the Kansas City Star reported.
A felony invasion-of-privacy charge levied against him has been dropped, however a special prosecutor has been considering whether to refile it.
An investigation by a bipartisan state legislative committee found the woman credible, and released a report laying out her allegations in great detail.
At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Greitens denied the allegations against him but said it had become too hard for him to continue in the job.
But Gardner said Greitens was unlikely to face prison time and that it was in the best interest of the city and state to move on. Information about the deal will be released on Wednesday.
He also ordered it turn over documents on communications and expenditures by A New Missouri related to media advertising.
Greitens likely will be replaced by Missouri Lieutenant Gov. Mike Parson.
“This is not the end of our fight”, Greitens said. The woman said she initially thought “this is going to be some sort of sexy workout”.
The House committee is weighing whether to recommend Greitens’ impeachment for alleged campaign finance violations.
The Missouri General Assembly, which is controlled by the governor’s own party, has been considering whether he should be impeached. Prosecutors say they have enough evidence to convict Greitens but that his conviction wouldn’t be worth pursuing after his resignation.
State law requires candidates to form committees when they raise or spend more than $500.
In 2016, the Missouri Governor accused President Barack Obama of “allowing grown men to go into little girls’ bathrooms” by passing legislation protecting the rights of trans students.
