Missouri protests embolden student leaders on other campuses
University of Missouri campus police filed an emergency request with Yik Yak for the poster’s information and received a phone number belonging to Park that had been used to create the Yik Yak account, according to court documents.
S&T is part of the University of Missouri System and Rolla is about 95 miles (153 km) south of Columbia.
The resignations this week of top University of Missouri administrators under fire for their handling of campus race issues is emboldening leaders of student groups at other universities dealing with racial strife to press their administrators for better treatment of black students, according to U.S. News and World Reports.
“I am honored to accept the appointment as interim president of the UM System, and lead our state’s premiere university during this extraordinary time“, Middleton said in a news release.
“The time has come for us to acknowledge and address our daunting challenges”, Middleton was quoted as saying in a university statement.
Middleton, who taught at the university for 30 years, attended both undergraduate and law school at MU.
Just after Mizzou named former Deputy Chancellor Michael Middleton as its interim president, the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center was vandalized.
Middleton earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri in 1968 and went on to earn his law degree from the MU Law School in 1971.
Another threatening post also cropped up over Yik Yak.
The threats showed up Tuesday on the anonymous location-based messaging app Yik Yak and other social media.
“I’m going to stand my ground tomorrow and shoot every black person I see”, stated the mysterious message which triggered disturbance among the students in the university, especially the African-American students. Authorities connected 19-year-old Hunter Park to a portion of the debilitating posts however did not say how.
The contrast in Mizzou’s student body between those of liberal and conservative backgrounds has been stark and has split the school into two campuses. He said he asked if the threats amounted to “saber rattling”, and Park responded, “pretty much”.
One of Park’s alleged posts said “Some of you are alright”.
“Showing support for the students at the University of Missouri is specifically important to me”.
“If you look at the history of the Civil Rights Movement, when concessions are made for equality and respect for human dignity, there have always been individuals who feel as though their liberty is being stifled”, Chapel said in a statement. “I just… deep interest”, Heckmaster wrote.
Park, who resides in Lake St. Louis, is not a student of Mizzou.
UW-Madison students will rally at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, November 12 at Bascom Hall. A university spokesman said they did not receive a formal request to hold the demonstration, but it did move forward.
