Mitt Romney: Ted Cruz ‘Way Over the Line’ Calling Obama Terror Sponsor
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a candidate for president, suggested that by concluding the nuclear deal with Iran, President Obama had become “the leading financier of terror”.
Obama hit back at Cruz, without naming the Texas senator, on Monday during a speech from Ethiopia. “The unavoidable effect of those facts is that if this deal goes through, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry, will be leading global financiers of radical Islamic terrorism on the face of the earth”.
In a round table discussion Tuesday, the Republican presidential hopeful asserted the deal will allow the release of “billions of dollars under control of this administration” to “flow into the hands of jihadists who will use that money to murder Americans, to murder Israelis, to murder Europeans”.
“Maybe this is just an effort to push [Donald] Trump out of the headlines, but it’s not the kind of leadership that is needed for America right now”, Obama scolded.
Mitt Romney may not be running for president this time around, but he’s increasingly taking on the role of party elder, speaking out for what he believes is the best way to elect a Republican to the White House.
During his Thursday radio interview, Cruz also connected his controversial terrorism argument to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who served in the Obama administration and is the Democratic presidential front-runner in 2016.
Cruz, who a week ago attacked Sen. Cruz endured a number of attacks for his accusation, not the least from the president himself. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on the Senate floor as a “liar”, was quick to fire back at Romney. “McCain and American veterans are true heroes”, Romney said.
“So Mitt Romney’s tweet today said, ‘Gosh, this rhetoric is not helpful, ‘” Cruz said.
Virtually all Republicans and many Democrats oppose the Iran nuke deal reached in Vienna on the grounds that its provisions are too weak to prevent the regime from developing an A-bomb, but it remains to be seen if there are enough votes among Democrats joining with Republicans in Congress to kill it. It also emerged this past week that there are secret side agreements in the nuclear pact that have not been shared with Congress. So OK, never mind.
“We need to stand up and speak the truth with a smile”, he said.
