Mkhitaryan signs for Man United on four-year deal
Mkhitaryan told the club’s website, www.manutd.com: “I am very proud to join Manchester United”. The Armenian global, who won Bundesliga Player of the Year honours after an outstanding 2015/16 campaign for BVB, has signed an initial four-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further 12 months. I am excited to play for a club with such an illustrious history and hope to be part of it for a long time.
After defender Eric Bailly and forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan becomes new manager Jose Mourinho’s third signing as the Portuguese looks to build on last season’s FA Cup win. “I don’t know. It is a question mark but my job is to delete that question mark as soon as possible and give him the stature, brain and personality to play for Manchester United”.
The midfielder is also Armenia’s skipper ans all-time top scorer, with 19 goals in 59 appearances since his worldwide debut in January 2007.
United manager Mourinho said: “Henrikh is a very talented footballer who has been in such prolific form for both his club and his country”.
Having underwhelmed in his first two years at the Westfalenstadion, the Armenian midfielder came to the fore last term with a division-high 15 assists seeing him named the Bundesliga’s players’ player of the season while he was also included in the top-flight team of the campaign.
The contract includes an option to extend for a fifth season.
Mourinho, who won two league titles with Chelsea during his first spell at the club between 2004 and 2007, had returned to the Stamford Bridge helm in 2013. During his early days at Dortmund there were some signs he was struggling to adapt to a new way of playing on the field, and that may be a slight concern for United supporters.
