On the national holiday honoring the birth of the civil rights leader Monday, over 100 people filled a church basement in Montpelier to remember his words and teachings.
King was assassinated nearly 50 years ago. In Minnesota, a rally against police brutality was planned.
“Martin Luther King Jr”. But he warned there would be other fights ahead.
The museum and activities attract about 8,000 people every year on MLK Day.
Now 68, Tom Houck once drove for a King – the leader of the movement. “Dr. King was about no violence he literally changed the world”, said Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero.
Only Clinton dealt directly with the flag. It’s another way for people to learn about King’s legacy and local impact.
We asked marchers: Is Dr. King’s dream close to reality? “We’re marching to show our solidarity not only with the people of America but the people in Macon”, said Daugherty.
Martin Luther King led many marches, and this afternoon students at Michigan State University will march across campus in tribute to his legacy.
It was one of many events across the country.
“That there is a point to this holiday and it’s to recognize the situation of our prejudice and our racism and we’ve come a long way and we still have more to go”, said Colleen Parkin, U.S. History Teacher. “But we just need to keep that momentum going”.
Pastor Boyd says he was too young to know what kind of impact Dr. King had made, but he understands it now all too well.
Rountree says before blacks can demand respect from law enforcement and others, they must respect themselves.
