Initially, several states contested the holiday, believing the Civil Rights movement was about more than one person.
“I just want him to be proud of us”, Emma Gregg said.
And everyone you talked to, volunteers gave you the sense that when they served others, they got something special in return. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message is more pertinent than ever.
In Minneapolis, activists braved frigid temperatures as they marched to protest the deaths of two black men shot by police there previous year.
“Dr. King is my hero”, Cathy Schuyler, one of the marchers armed with a megaphone, said.
Swinton says the uses the fun parade as a way to open up the conversation about the past and present struggles with race and inequality.
As King opened the door to a brighter future for many of us, these people are hoping to open the door to a better future for our kids.
For the 32nd year in a row, the breakfast held by Southern New Hampshire Outreach for Black Unity celebrated King’s life and legacy. “I’m not so sure that anyone else could have done what Dr. King did”.
“We need to take actions that make quality educations a reality for every child in America regardless of his or her zip code and that moves american forward to debt free college for all Americans again”, explained O’Malley.
“We are praying for violent activity to stop” she said. All of whom weren’t asked to show up, but just did to beautify this 12th Street elementary school so that students could dream bigger and learn more about life outside of their lesson plans.
“It’s an opportunity for us to come together as a people, as Americans, to be able to acknowledge the things that has not happened and the things that need to happen”, Washington said.
