Mo Farah to race at London Diamond League – The West Australian
Britain’s greatest athlete confirmed on Tuesday that he will return to the scene of his double London Olympic triumph to race at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games on July 24.
Somalian-born Brit Farah will compete in the 5,000m race at the Diamond League event in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday.
Farah had earlier said that he had never taken performance-enhancing drugs in his life, insisting that he would never resort to any such things.
Farah, 32, withdrew from last month’s Diamond League meet in Birmingham citing stress over doping allegations faced by his coach Alberto Salazar, who has denied any wrongdoing.
Farah, who is aiming to successfully defend his world 5,000 and 10,000 meters titles next month in China, believes the meet at the Olympic Stadium on July 24 comes at an ideal time.
It will be his first race over the distance this season and the 32-year-old will be up against five of the top six in the world rankings this year – and seven Ethiopians and six Kenyans in total – as he gears up for the defence of his world titles in Beijing next month.
The 3000m at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games will be the best possible preparation.
“I hope that the fans will come out and cheer me on at the Olympic Stadium. My training is going well and it is just what I need to prepare more for the IAAF World Championships”, he said.
“The Olympic Stadium feels like home to me”.
He has vowed to dump Oregon-based Salazar if the allegations are proven, though, and has welcomed the investigations by UK Anti Doping and the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
