Mobile axes data limits, but low-data users might pay more
So what limitations does Sprint impose on “unlimited” data? Customers get a $10 discount if he or she opts for the TV/wireless data package.
Let’s dive into the latest example.
On T-Mobile, the cost of an unlimited plan for one person is dropping to $70 from $95 a month for customers who don’t mind DVD-level video quality. The first line on the One plan will cost $70 a month, the second adds $50, and then all the rest add $20 each. The telecommunications corporation released a revised lineup of their monthly service plans called Mobile Share Advantage.
That unlimited data isn’t truly unlimited. If you’ve ever been throttled before, you know how bad this is. Take a look at the video below for more details. With unlimited everything – talk, text and high-speed smartphone data – T-Mobile ONE unleashes customers to just use their smartphones without ever worrying about data limits again. There are also a bunch of net neutrality issues related to prioritizing some video streaming services over others. Also, hotspot data is unlimited but is capped at 2G, which isn’t exactly usable. An extra $5 per month per line is required to unlock 5GB of tethering at 4G LTE speeds. The slower speeds will be fine for email and basic status updates on Facebook, but photos will be hard and streaming video almost impossible. It’s current unlimited plans don’t feature such restrictions. For US$30, customers used to get 2 gigabytes of data. It’d be more accurate to say this is a 26 GB plan, not an unlimited plan.
The new plan, T-Mobile One, is the Bellevue carrier’s twelfth “Un-carrier” campaign, which offer benefits partly created to get customers to leave their current carrier and join T-Mobile. Legere said T-Mobile’s LTE network now covers 99.7 percent of Verizon customers, too. “It simplifies the whole concept of how you deal with T-Mobile”.
Interestingly enough, Sprint also introduces a similar plan today.
T-Mobile’s move didn’t go unanswered for long.
“Who knows? Maybe there will be some cool new phones in September”, Legere said. There are so many moving parts to this that there is no good, concise answer. On accounts with automatic payments disabled, users will have to shell out an extra $5 per month per line. The most surprising is that T-Mobile One plans will only allow for streaming video in 480p.
These plans are just so wrong in so many ways.
