Mobile’s ‘Binge On’ lets you stream video, leave your data untouched
One notable exception to the announced services is YouTube.
If you are curious as to what T-Mobile will officially announce, we have embedded the livestream below.
Legere during a Tuesday event said users can expect “DVD quality” video that the operator has optimized to use less data through a few proprietary technology.
Eight months later, a T-Mobile spokesperson tells GeekWire, the company is signing up new business customers at twice the rate as before.
Customer plans are being doubled at no cost and a new Family Match promotion doubles the amount of data available to each family member.
T-Mobile says its push to attract more business customers is paying off, as the company is starting to see the same kind of traction in that segment as it has seen with consumers over the past couple of years. Of course, when grilled about whether you’ll ever get content in quality better than 480p at any point, T-Mobile simply waffled around the question and made jokes – take that for what you will. We’ll have to wait for the fine print on these new changes to see what, exactly, is in store.
“With Binge On, no one pays-not the customers, not the video streaming services-and everyone wins”, said Legere. “As I said before, all content is going to the Internet and all internet is going mobile”. T-Mobile has added 1 million net subscribers for the last 10 quarters thanks to its aggressive schemes, which helped ween the USA telecom industry off two-year contracts.
To be sure, other carriers are hip to the consumer appeal of video. Worse still, the carriers’ overages scare customers into buying more data each month than they need-only so Verizon and AT&T can repossess it after 30 or 60 days. T-Mobile’s Unlimited LTE customers now get 14GB of mobile hotspot data instead of 7GB. “People hate sharing their data”. But even if everyone wants different amounts, there are savings to be had – up to 25% for those mix and match scenarios, says T-Mobile. And now with Binge On, T-Mobile customers don’t just get 6GB each, they get unlimited video streaming from popular sites as well.
“T-Mobile’s attack on video streaming data caps, combined with Sling TV’s delivery of live TV, including sports, will change the way Americans embrace television”, said Roger Lynch, CEO of Sling TV.
