“Mockingjay” Remains On Top With Moviegoers
Katniss Everdeen and the folks over at The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 couldn’t be bested by a trio of new releases over the holiday weekend, and the finale of the blockbuster series once again takes the cake at the box office for the second week in a row! It’s still running behind Mockingay – Part One’s ten-day domestic total of $225.68 million, and it most likely won’t catch up.
In total, the Lionsgate film has earned an estimated $75.8 million between Wednesday and Sunday.
The Good Dinosaur – a charming but perfunctory tale – performed well, raking in $39.1 million on its opening weekend, but it failed to match the success of Inside Out, released earlier this year.
With Mockingjays, dinosaurs and boxers, moviegoers had plenty to feast on at the box office this weekend.
Mockingjay- Part 2, the last installment in The Hunger Games’ franchise, is still a bit behind Part 1, which devoured $82.7 million last Thanksgiving, but with another $62 million in worldwide sales, the highest foreign sales of the week, Part 2 now sits at $242.4 million internationally and $440.7 million globally.
Mockingjay Part 2 appears to be recovering a little bit from its somewhat disappointing opening weekend.
The film distributed by Warner Bros., which like CNN is owned by Time Warner, has gotten rave reviews for both its young director, Ryan Coogler, and its stars Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. Audiences want to see new films in old movie series if they have an interesting premise, as evidenced by the major box office performance of “Jurassic World” this past summer. Grossing an estimated $55.7 million, the prehistoric animated feature fell short of projections of more than $60 million. After almost 4 weeks in theaters, Bond has earned over $176 million at the domestic box-office. The film earned $42.6 million over five days.
Coming in at No. 3 is the newest “Rocky” film, “Creed“. The movie, starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, finished significantly lower than projected with only $3.4 million and did not crack the top 10. It’s the second film by Max Landis to recently bomb at the box office, but it’s not really his fault.
That sounds like a lot, but last week the film had the lowest opening weekend of the entire franchise at over $102 million. While the film Victor Frankenstein by FOX was one of the worst wide release openings.
