Mom at zoo: ‘He’s dragging my son! I can’t watch this!’
“My son fell in with the gorilla”, Michelle Gregg, the mother of the child who fell in the exhibit told the 911 dispatcher.
The Philadelphia Zoo will hold a meeting to review safety procedures following the incident at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden this past weekend, Andy Baker, the zoo’s chief operating officer, told the Metro.
Harambe, a 17-year-old gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo is pictured in this undated handout photo provided by Cincinnati Zoo.
Q: Have other parents been charged with putting a child in danger at a zoo?
DISPATCH: Ok, we already have that started.
“He’s dragging my son”, said Gregg.
“I can’t watch this”, she says. Harambe, on the other hand, was shot after zoo personnel determined the child’s life was at stake, to the hysterical outrage of many.
Criminal defense attorney Mark Krumbein said he does not believe any criminal charges will be filed. Ultimately, the decision to pursue possible charges is up to the local prosecutor.
Animals exhibited in zoos are deprived of nearly everything that they would experience in their natural habitats, including space to run and roam and the chance to choose whom to mate and share space with. The family said they continue to “praise God” and also are thankful to the Cincinnati Zoo “for their actions taken to protect our child”. A tranquilizer does not take effect quickly enough and the gorilla may have become agitated, zoo officials said.
“It’s unthinkable that a zoo exhibit would be created in such a way that a little 3-old-boy could climb in”, she said.
While gorillas aren’t carnivores like tigers are, Hansen of the American Association of Zoo Keepers said Harambe posed just as much of a threat of injuring the boy, either on objective or inadvertently.
The tape was one of five released Wednesday by Cincinnati police, who said they’re investigating the actions of the boy’s family.
The boy’s family did not comment on the police investigation, but released a statement saying he continued to do well.
“We are also very appreciative for the expressions of concern and support …”
The Jane Goodall Institute shared an email Goodall, one of the world’s most well-known primatologists, sent to Thane Maynard following the fatal shooting of the endangered 17-year-old lowland gorilla named Harambe.
Marshfield parks and rec director, Justin Casperson said most the zoos around the country are governed by the USDA and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
