Mom, boyfriend charged in Baby Doe case to be arraigned
McCarthy is being held wihout bail.
Bond’s lawyer, Janice Bassil, asked the judge to set a low cash bail, $250, citing years of homelessness, and a newly clean record as of 2011. They are due back in court October 20 for a status hearing. Bond, the toddler’s mother, 40, is being charged with accessory after the fact. Sprinsky relayed to police that Bond said Bella was possessed by demons, and other friends of the couple told police that McCarthy claimed he had the ability to exorcise demons, according to the prosecutor. “Michael McCarthy was allegedly standing over the 2½-year-old, who had been unruly and unwilling to go to bed”. Rachelle Bond had told him she was staying “with family”, before admitting in a text message to Sprinsky that she was dead and “that is the truth on my daughter’s gone soul”.
Bella was Boston’s Baby Doe, no longer a nameless symbol but a real little girl with a life nearly as troubling as her death.
Investigators eventually traced Bella to Boston by examining pollen gathered from her clothes, and a tip led police to the child’s mother and live-in boyfriend. He then allegedly threatened to kill Bond if she reported anything to police.
McCarthy’s lawyer, Jonathan Shapiro, told Boston NPR station WBUR that McCarthy will plead not guilty. McCarthy has been charged with murder, and Bond for accessory to murder after the fact. Sprinsky said he moved out because he was appalled by how they treated Bella.
Authorities on Friday finally identified Baby Doe as 2½-year-old Bella and announced charges against Ms Bond and her boyfriend, Mr McCarthy.
Joseph Amoroso, a man who says he’s the girl’s biological father, yelled that McCarthy “won’t last a day”.
A crowed gathered Sunday in Boston to remember a little girl, whose face intreagued a nation, but no one knew her name. Bond looked down and appeared to wipe tears away as Deakin spoke.
McCarthy allegedly caused Bella’s death intentionally and he and Bond are also accused of keeping her death a secret to avoid prosecution, authorities said.
The tot’s body was found June 25 inside a trash bag on Deer Island in Winthrop, across the water from Boston’s Logan Airport, by a woman walking a dog.
A search of the couple’s home uncovered many books about spirits, ghosts and demonology.
As Deakin described Bella’s body being hauled to the Boston Harbor, a woman in the courtroom yelled “Rot in hell!” and was escorted out.
As the disturbing details surrounding the life and death of Bella Bond were read out in a Boston court, her godmother, Megan Fewtrell, lashed out.
Deakin said Bond had a lengthy criminal history that included drug and prostitution cases, on which she routinely failed to appear. She would have turned 3 last month.
According to Sprinsky, the couple had locked Bella inside a closet at least twice for 30 minutes to an hour while she screamed to be freed, the prosecutor said.
But their stories about that fateful night and the events leading up to the September 16 identification of Bella’s body are anything but identical.
I cannot believe how evil people can be, and how much drugs can twist our thinking, even when it comes to the safety of our own children.
