Mom pried son’s head from mountain lion’s mouth
There is an estimated 4,500 mountain lions living in Colorado who occasionally wander into residential areas.
A mother in the United States is being hailed as a hero after she “prised open” the jaws of a mountain lion that was holding her five-year-old son by his head, authorities say.
She managed to pull her child away from the beast before her partner called police and started driving the injured boy to hospital.
The sheriff’s office said the boy suffered face, head and neck injuries and was in fair condition at a hospital in Denver.
The mother suffered bite marks on her hand and scratches on her leg, authorities said.
After talking with the boy’s parents, Buglione and another officer met an official with the U.S. Forest Service law enforcement at the house. The boy was playing outside his home, when a ferocious lion attacked him.
“It wasn’t a big cat”, Buglione said.
A 5-year-old boy was attacked by a mountain lion at around 8 p.m. Friday.
“Had it been a 110-pound lion – which I’ve seen around here – this would have been a much different story”.
“If that animal engages, not just a lion, but a bear, you want to fight”, said Matt Robbins with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Wildlife officials say they shot one young mountain lion near the home and a second one in the area several hours later.
Mountain lions attacking humans are rare, but they are happening more often, mainly due to people entering their habitat with increasing frequency.
Barely saved. A 5 year old boy was attacked by a mountain lion, also known as a puma, in Colorado. A young lion attacked a man as he fished north of Dotsero, about 60 miles from where Friday’s attack occurred. Hospital staff treated her bites and scratches and released her.
A 43-year-old man has died after two jet skis collided at Lake Pueblo State Park.
The lion in that incident, a small yearling male, was tracked down and killed.
