St. Mary’s school board members approved Wednesday a slew of textbooks for math, English and world language learners at their meeting, as well as purchasing for building air filters and a contract for maintaining sprinklers at school sites.
The two previous years, the school district racked up $28,819 in fiscal year 2017 and $29,738 in fiscal year 2016, Simmons told Foster’s earlier this year.
The district serves about 4,800 students in grades kindergarten through eighth, with many among the poorest in San Diego County. In July, Superintendent Henning-Piedmonte sought the board’s approval to be compensated for five vacation days she could not use due to the need for her to be on-site to oversee the final phase of the district’s capital improvement project during the summer.
A Chula Vista High School graduate, Potter said she has deep roots in South Bay education. There are 10 classes over capacity at the elementary schools, according to data presented to the board.
Guntharp, who is the district’s newest assistant superintendent, said it was good for her to see the schools firsthand. The current policy states that children receive a different meal if they have an unpaid balance over a certain amount; however, Business Manager Kristi Werner explained the district does not follow that policy and allows students to eat the same meal as everyone else so that students aren’t made to feel uncomfortable. The district tax cap established by the state is 5.84 percent.
The original proposal estimated cost savings for the district of about $3.6 million during the next three years.
The total cost for the projects is $581,743.
The interim superintendent also maintained throughout the last month that any proposed school closures are because of size and low enrollment and not because of a school’s test scores and academic performance.
She said she would resign as DAC chair if elected but would keep her job with the foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds to support CVUSD programs and students.
