‘Moonlight’ and ‘La La Land’ directors talk about historic Oscars blunder
“Martha and I are really the only two who know who the winners are on the night of the Academy Awards”, Cullinan said in the video. Just minutes after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced that “La La Land” had won Best Picture, Jordon Horowitz, one of the film’s producers, explained that there had been a mistake, and “Moonlight” was the real victor.
Beatty was given a “backup” envelope with the victor of the previously-annouced best actress category enclosed – naming Emma Stone of “La La Land” the victor of that award. “He was so at ease, he even found time to tweet from backstage about Emma Stone as the show neared its climax”, the Times wrote (Cullinan has since deleted that tweet, along with all of his star-studded tweets from Sunday evening).
By Monday afternoon, the photographs had been taken down.
The ABC show drew 32.9 million viewers, the second- lowest total since Nielsen started tracking viewership in 1974. Moonlight, you guys won best picture”-was one of the most surprising reversals in Oscar history, with apparent human error combining with live television to powerful, jaw-dropping effect”.
Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz, who had worked on the balloting team for four and there years respectively, have been relieved of their duties.
During this years Oscars ceremony, “La La Land” was incorrectly announced the best picture victor by presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
There was just one problem: Moonlight was the victor for Best Picture. “This is not a joke”.
I also hope that people don’t take a cue from this incident and say that they are being heroic and kind-hearted by giving Black people a chance at glory.
The academy and PwC made clear in separate statements that the mistake went beyond human error, identically citing “breaches of established protocols” at the ceremony.
Earlier this week, PWC chairman Tim Ryan told the magazine: “He feels very, very awful and frightful”. “And it is also my mistake, our mistake and we all feel very bad”.
As presenters, winners and members from Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences huddled to discuss the fiasco, there were shouts of excitement. Given the possibility of going up for adapted screenplay, I assumed there was a chance I wouldn’t speak at all, that I would have already said my piece.
Most presenters entered stage right, where Cullinan was posted and where he handed Beatty and Dunaway the errant envelope. The two films duked it out during awards season, picking up various accolades – the American Film Institute, Critics Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, the London Film Critics’ Circle Awards, and so on – and in doing so, took on far more symbolism than either needed to carry.
Collider quickly shared this video with the caption: “So, uh, Emma Stone had her card the whole time???” “But then I had to very quickly get back into that place”.
Dunaway, 76, declined to comment. Host Jimmy Kimmel and Beatty made their way toward the microphone.
The president addressed the best picture blunder in an interview with Breitbart News on Monday, hours after the Oscars telecast ended in a surreal swirl of confusion.
