‘Moonlight’ named Best Picture at Academy Awards after ‘La La Land’ mix-up
E! will have live coverage of the stars’ arrivals starting at 5:30 p.m. EST.
“Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time?”
Despite the utter shock and confusion that engulfed the Dolby Theatre at the Academy Awards on Sunday night after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway incorrectly declared La La Land the victor of the Best Picture prize, it seems Beatty remains as mystified as anyone. Then he made the first Trump joke of the night: “Maybe this is not a popular thing to say, but I want to say thank you to President Trump – I mean, remember previous year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist?” And that’s because of how the Oscars have historically gone down. In fact, as Slate discovered, the ceremony hasn’t managed to stay within its three-hour time slot since the 1980s.
But two minutes 22 seconds later, all hell broke loose.
Outstanding achievements in film will be honored at the 89th Academy Awards, airing today at 7 p.m. ET on ABC with Jimmy Kimmel serving as host.
What was even more striking was that none of my fellow journalists could name last year’s victor, Spotlight, a film that celebrated our profession, print journalism.
The main political statement came when Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won best foreign language film – but was not there to collect the award because he stayed away in protest at Mr Trump’s attempted travel ban.
Even with playoff music, the award recipients’ speeches are a big reason for why the show lasts longer than scheduled. “Thank you Casey Affleck, Casey Affleck, Casey Affleck”.
The La La Land people handled it amazingly well, especially considering they’d already given their acceptance speeches.
While speaking to the press backstage, actress Emma Stone said: “I also was holding my best actress in a leading role card that entire time”. So when and where can you watch the gorgeous red carpet looks of nominees like Emma Stone online for free at the Academy Awards? Although some public speeches have been somewhat cringeworthy (Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille award), here are the top five subtle (not subtle) jabs at Trump from the 2017 Academy Awards.
Academy Award victor Octavia Spencer recently told Entertainment Weekly: “When you know how movies are made, the explosion of films with people of color is not a reaction to #OscarsSoWhite”. The in memoriam should certainly run long to pay tribute to all the talented people the world lost previous year.
Where to Watch Oscars 2017: You can also watch Oscars live on ABC.
Jeff Bridges was great in “Hell or High Water”, but he won the best actor award a few years ago. Kimmel ordered that CNN, the New York Times and Los Angeles Times all be removed from the ceremony; he offered faux-concern to a Swedish cinematographer about the awful thing that happened in Sweden; and even tried to goad Trump by tweeting directly at him on stage.
