Moonlight Wins Best Picture In The Weirdest Way Possible
But this was something different: Beatty apparently
The accountant from PriceWaterhouseCoopers jumps up and says, “He (presenter Warren Beatty) took the wrong envelope!” and goes running onstage.
La La Land was then announced as the victor of the top prize, with all of the cast and crew taking to the stage.
And just as Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt, the producers of La La Land, were done delivering their speeches, a sudden flurry of activity on the stage pointed towards a plot twist. From his controversial travel ban being protested by award winners to Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel taunting the president through tweets.
After which, Beatty went on to explain what happened.
To make things more confusing, Stone was holding her results envelope after she received her statuette. It all started when Mr Beatty opened the envelope and Ms Dunaway took over to announce Damien Chazelle’s La La Land as the victor of the top award of the night. “I wasn’t trying to be amusing”, said the 79-year-old American actor and filmmaker.
The musical had been the favourite to win.
“This is very unfortunate what happened. I’m not sure what happened. and I really wanted to talk to you guys first”. “I blame myself for this”.
In pre-award ceremony publicity, Cullinan said in an interview: ‘The producers decide what order the awards will be. “And that’s all I have I have to say on the subject”, he told the Los Angeles Times.
Now, in retrospect we can see why Beatty was hesitating.
But Beatty, who seemed early on reluctant to read the printed victor and who apologized onstage after the mistake became apparent, is not alone. And yet slowly, La La Land started picking up award after award: for cinematography, Original Score, Original Song, and Best Director, making Damien Chazelle (at 32) the youngest person to ever win Best Director.
Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim male acting victor, for Moonlight, with Viola Davis the first black actor to win an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony. Read that article on here.
