‘Moonlight’ Wins Best Picture, ‘La La Land’ Gets Trophy!!
The production team of La La Land were a few minutes into their speech when it was revealed the WRONG victor was announced.
But to thicken the plot even more, Stone told the press room after the madness that she was holding onto the best actress envelope while onstage with the “La La Land” cast and producers when they thought they won.
“We lost, by the way”, one of the producers said into the microphone before trailing off, amid growing confusion on the stage and in the audience.
Accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers have taken responsibility for the mistake that led to the wrong film being announced as the Best Picture victor at the 2017 Oscars.
“Personally I blame Steve Harvey for this”, Kimmel said, referencing the moment Harvey fluffed the announcement of 2015’s Miss Universe pageant victor. “At that point it was not about me, it was about making sure Moonlight got the recognition it really deserves”.
After the mix-up, host Jimmy Kimmel commented, “It’s very unfortunate”. “When I opened the envelope, it said “Emma Stone: La La Land'”. Fate has a plan for you, and I’m excited to see what’s ahead’. It’s worth noting that in the build-up to last night’s ceremony, it was widely believed that the Best Picture category was a two-film race between La La Land and Moonlight, two great but incredibly different films.
“Even in my dreams this can not be true”, said an astonished Jenkins, once he reached the stage. “Oh my goodness”, Barry exclaimed. “But I will say I saw two cards”, he explained, adding that Beatty “refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me”. We’ve been on the road with these guys for so long. About one minute into the festivities, however, word surfaced that La La Land didn’t win, but Moonlight did. “My love to everybody!” They also added that they were now investigating “how this could have happened”.
“Hot damn, we won best picture”.
While Beatty did not notice the Best Actress written on the card in place of Best Picture, he knew something was wrong as he stared at Dunaway for a while before she announced the victor.
The 2016 Best Lead Actor victor presented Emma Stone with her award but held on to the envelope that caused the entire mix-up.
Of course, it’s been hailed on Twitter as being perhaps the quintessential image of the evening.
