More heat this weekend | Weather
The National Weather Service was urging people to prepare for the next couple days of unsafe heat and humidity by starting to hydrate Thursday. Highs today will top out in the 90s with heat indices above 100.
When the increased humidity is factored in, the temperature will feel closer to 104 and 109 degrees on both days. That is due to the abundant moisture which tends to mitigate the heating, somewhat, although the heat/humidity combination more than makes up for that.
A heat advisory is in effect in Western Iowa for a heat index near 105. The temperature inside a vehicle can climb over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. Our winds will be relatively light with southerly winds of 8-15 miles per hour during the day and less at night.
Afternoon highs will be near 96 under partly cloudy skies. That, in turn, means at least a possibility of scattered showers or storms. Omaha topped out at 98 degrees Friday afternoon, the hottest reading in almost two years. The temperatures were expected to be even warmer Friday and Saturday, with highs topping out in the mid 90s. Also, the signal suggests a more active pattern with periodic chances of showers/storms during that time frame as well. If you’re out for supper, temps will still be in the low 90s at 7 PM.
