More Murray misery in men’s doubles final
A little bit red-faced as all eyes focused on him, Beckham cheered on Jamie Murray and John Peers who won in four sets against Germany’s Philipp Petzschner and Jonathan Erlich of Israel.
Murray and Peers have lost to their fellow finalists twice in their three previous clashes. The cheques were becoming smaller, the tournaments were increasingly low-tier and it was becoming nearly unrealistic to sustain his career.
Jamie and Australian partner John Peers were beaten 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 by fourth seeds Jean-Julien Rojer, from the Netherlands, and Horia Tecau, from Romania. “I took some time to get into it but we always felt that we would find a way”. It wasn’t much fun for me. Back then it all happened so fast. “Thankfully it has worked out”.
Murray and Peers started the second set more combatively and broke Petzschner’s serve to take a 2-0 lead.
Asked after his crushing defeat to Federer if he would be in the stands to watch Jamie, Andy said: “I may come and be here and see what the score is”. “I don’t mind some attention”.
“He’s been playing brilliantly the last few months”. I don’t really like it. It’s probably not the case but it feels as though when I watch him, he loses.
David Beckham proved his ball skills aren’t just limited to the football pitch at Wimbledon yesterday (July 9).
Afterwards the American had words of encouragement for 21-year-old Muguruza, who cried as she received a standing ovation from the Centre Court crowd.
“It is a great result”, said 29-year-old Jamie.
“I thought at one point he was going to get bored and walk out. I was happy he stayed until the bitter end”. I think all the hard work we’ve put in is kind of paying off. “It is kind of undervalued a bit”.
Andy Murray’s brother Jamie and partner Peers won their crucial match to book a place in the men’s doubles final – but the clash will forever be remembered for Becks’ catch. On Friday, he was with his son Romeo, 12, watching the match between Andy Murray and Vasek Pspisil.
“This is our third year together so for doubles teams that’s quite a long while”, Murray said.
