More Rowan firefighters heading to Lake Lure area wildfire
The U.S. Forest Service expects the fire to be fully contained on Sunday.
Plus fire season usually ends in the summer, it’s nearly thanksgiving.
“I was hoping that the percentage of containment would increase, but they are still sticking with 30 percent right now”, Bond said.
State Agriculture investigators, the State Fire Marshal’s office and local authorities arrested Matthew Ryan Wallace, 27, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. “They don’t have to be chasing things around as much”. “If the perimeter expands by 20 percent, even if we complete 20 percent more containment we’re standing still”, Lyon said. They went in response to a request from the N.C. State Emergency Operations Center for 100 engine companies and brush trucks to fight the Lake Lure fire, which threatens the village of Chimney Rock and surrounding homes and cottages.
The Party Rock fire is still only 19 percent contained and is slowly spreading in most directions.
Greathouse said it results in firefighters backing off farther from fires and using natural barriers like streams and roads as containment lines.

Harmon said that unfortunately the smoke and particulate matter in the area are dependent on the size of the fire, and “it’s not necessarily something that can be avoided, because it’s just a cause-and-effect-type situation”.
Firefighters from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough and 13 departments in Wake County are all assisting as well.
“The winds are still going to be light and variable, which is good because that gives us the opportunity to get more work in with the lines”, Bond said.
“It depends a lot on the weather”, Smith said. Some areas remain closed, including the Joyce Kilmer Slickrock Wilderness and parts of the Appalachian Trail and other trails.
The Rough Ridge Fire in the northwest area of the state is the biggest fire in Georgia.
In North Carolina, Gov.
Lyon said phones have been ringing constantly as people inquire about evacuations and the spread of the fire, including homeowners anxious about their homes. Tennessee authorities also reported arrests for arson and burning violations.
Evacuations have affected around 1,000 people, Tillotson said.
“It does kind of suck to be away from family during the holidays especially being 2,000 miles away from family and knowing that we probably won’t be able to see them the day after Thanksgiving or the day before Thanksgiving”.
They have been implementing burnouts in Division J, known as Juliet, in the southwest area, Bond said. There are over 5,000 firefighters and support staff from around the country working to suppress the fires, as well as 40 aircraft, including three large air tankers flying out of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
