More stores open doors on Thanksgiving

Madeira said Wal-Mart has noticed that in recent years searches for Cyber Monday deals on their app and Web site start to pick up Sunday evening, with many shoppers staying up until the midnight to pounce early. The retailer plans to offer deals on more than 2,000 items-four times the number from last year-starting on the Sunday night before Cyber Monday. Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day and it remains to be one of the few days of the year when shoppers literally flock the stores in droves to get the best holiday shopping deals of the year.

And if you want to save the most money at Walmart, Powell says Thanksgiving Day is the time to do it either in the store or online. Old Navy at Crabtree Valley Mall will open at 4 p.m. and Best Buy will open at 5 p.m. On Friday, mall hours begin at 6 a.m. But those deals will also be available online, said Erica Jones, a spokeswoman for the retailer.

Wal-Mart has already teased some of its specials for the holiday season ahead of its major competitor, Amazon.

One thing I have noticed is that Black Friday is becoming overly commercialized and distracting shoppers from enjoying a nice heartfelt meal with their families. Marked-down merchandise can be purchased both online and in stores the day before Thanksgiving.

The home page screams, “Black Friday now, shop early, beat the rush”.

Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving, may see the biggest turnout.

According to Adobe’s 2015 Holiday Shopping Predictions, Cyber Monday sales are forecast to hit US$3 billion, with Black Friday growing significantly over a year ago to reach US$1.8 billion.

The deal “creep” witnessed during Black Friday now appears to be happening to Cyber Monday as well.

Earlier this month, Target announced it will open its doors at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, the same time as past year. By expanding opportunities to access the holiday sales, Walmart might snatch the deal seekers before Amazon has the chance.
