More Tests Needed to Determine Cause of Ex-NFLer Tyler Sash’s Death
Former Iowa and New York Giants safety Tyler Sash was found dead at his home Tuesday.
The cause of death was not immediately confirmed by authorities. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, according to the Des Moines Register. Against rival Iowa State, three attempted passes found their way into Sash’s hands, propelling the Hawkeyes to a 35-3 victory, and later in the season, an Orange Bowl win.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz cancelled his regular Tuesday news conference to Wednesday for “a private issue”, but expressed his sadness in a statement released by the school.
“I’ll play anywhere they want me to play, ” Sash said at the time of his commitment prior to his senior year of high school.
“We are all very saddened to hear about the untimely loss of Tyler”, Ferentz said in a statement. Sash was cut by the Giants before the 2013 season.
We knew Sash around these parts for the awesome birthday cake he once received and his Tinker Bell blanket at training camp.
Sash played for the New York Giants from 2011 to 2013. Rest in peace, Tyler Sash. “He did so much in the community with his foundation”. Sash, a devout Christian, kind of did, too, in this pre-Super Bowl interview.
Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich said he saw Sash six months ago during a visit to Iowa, and he seemed normal: he had a house, a dog, family and friends.
Paki O’Meara, a former Iowa running back and teammate of Sash, described him as a quiet guy who came alive on game day.
Fox reports on Sash’s career in football, which is beyond impressive. Sash was a standout at Iowa, and now still holds the career interception yardage record for the Hawkeyes.
In 2012, the National Football League suspended Tyler for four games after testing positive for Adderall, a banded substance.
Tyler was arrested in May 2014 in Iowa after he allegedly led officers on a four-block chase while on a motorized scooter.
