More than 2100 pregnant Colombian women infected with Zika virus
In Thailand, where just one case of Zika has been reported so far this year, the likelihood of Zika spreading was low, officials said, partly because of better access to health care and because Thailand was dealing with a smaller area.
The disease has been linked to a serious birth defect called microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with small heads and underdeveloped brains.
Health minister Marcelo Castro echoed her words, telling reporters “the mosquito is not stronger than the entire country”. Currently, there are 35 cases of Zika in the US – all acquired outside the country.
Jamaica and Peru reported their first confirmed cases over the weekend, with the Peruvian President Ollanta Humala stressing that the patient contracted the disease outside of the country.
Metro Health officials confirmed to KENS 5 that six people are being tested for the Zika virus in Bexar County.
Some are concerned fear over the Zika virus could lead to more illegal abortions that jeopardize women’s health.
Epidemiologist Jussi Sane at the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) told ABC News that a Finnish tourist was infected by the Zika virus after visiting the Maldives last summer.
“There is ongoing transmission in Central and South America, and some of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands”, Dr. Philip Huang, M.D., said.

Colombia and other Latin American countries have advised women to delay getting pregnant.
“These are the same steps that all Virginians here in our community can take to protect themselves from mosquito bites”, said Morrison about mosquito bite prevention.
The committee will draft a recommendation to Chan, who will make a determination next week whether to declare Zika a “public health emergency of global concern”, or PHEIC.
The virus which has symptoms ranging from fever and rash to joint pain and red eyes is something medical providers will be watching closely during this travel season and as the summer months approach.
