More than 3100 pregnant women in Colombia have Zika virus – government

As concerns about the Zika virus grow by the day, Oakland resident Brook Meakins is breathing a huge sigh of relief.

“It’s contagious, and it’s new”, said respondent Toni Brockington, 42, who lives near Fort Bragg, California, and had considered visiting Mexico before learning about the outbreak.

He said, usually if a person had a body temperature of more than 37 degrees Celsius, the colour scale on the thermo scanner would change, thus making it easy for medical officers to determine if a person was in good health or not.

After she and her husband returned from a Christmastime vacation in Bora Bora in French Polynesia, she developed a rash and achy joints.

But Santos, speaking on national television, said there was no evidence yet definitively linking the virus to the devastating fetal developmental disorder known as microcephaly, which leaves newborns with deformed skulls and underdeveloped brains. Though Zika virus does not cause mortality, there are concerns following suspected possible associations found between the virus and neurological problems like microcephaly, a condition of abnormally small head in babies.

Zika virus is spreading like a bushfire across South America with Colombia announcing that it has registered more than 25,000 infected people nationwide with some 3,100 of them being pregnant women, whose fetuses risk developing microcephaly. Officials at the CDC are advising those who are pregnant to avoid travel to Zika-infected areas, and those who already live in those areas to avoid pregnancy. 60 percent of the respondents said Zika virus makes them anxious, while the other 18 percent makes them “very concerned” about it.

The virus is suspected of causing two serious complications, though it has not been scientifically linked to either: microcephaly in babies, and Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Efforts to control the spread of the virus focus on eliminating mosquito breeding sites and taking precautions against mosquito bites such as using insect repellent and mosquito nets.

The U.N. human-rights agency called for some nations to loosen laws against abortion, and USA health authorities recommended that men who have visited areas with the Zika virus use condoms if they have sex with pregnant women. All three were infected with Zika, Gaviria said, telling reporters that authorities believed the virus was to blame for their deaths.

The virus gets its name comes from a forest in Uganda where it was first discovered in infected rhesus monkeys in 1947.

Huge crowds of revelers filled the city center in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro while in Recife, the city most affected by the disease, more than a million people were partying, according to media reports. The exception is if there’s blood in the saliva, but in that case it’s the blood and not the saliva that’s transmitting the virus.

The timing and extent of fetal brain damage could vary case to case and probably depends on when in pregnancy the infection occurs, Moore said. There have been no subsequent cases reported in the state.
