More than 500000 hoverboards recalled in US
CPSC has investigated more than 60 hoverboard fires in more than 20 states that resulted in more than $2 million in property damage. “Numerous industry’s major players, including Swagway and Razor, are offering refunds, repairs or replacement hoverboards, depending on the model”, said Commission chairman Elliot Kaye.
Hoverboards, which run from about US$200 (S$270) to over US$900, were a hugely popular Christmas gift last December, even as reports of sudden fires started to emerge.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on Wednesday a massive recall of the two-wheeled, self-balancing motorized scooters also known as hoverboards.
The recall also affects models from two retailers – Boscov’s of Reading, Pennsylvania, and Overstock.com Inc, of Salt Lake City, Utah. Deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $1 trillion annually.
The hoverboards were sold at mass merchandisers nationwide and online June 2015 through may 2016.
Of the companies named, Swagway had the most recalled hoverboards, at 267,000.
The hoverboards are fire hazards and pose risks to consumers’ safety, according to the CPSC recall.
The CPSC advised people to stop using the hoverboards and return them to where they bought them as soon as possible.
