More Violence in Ferguson, Missouri
No officers were injured, the department said. Officers in an unmarked vehicle drove toward one of those individuals, later identified as Harris. All 10 are felonies.
Harris remains hospitalized following surgery.
Harris told KMOV that his child was “running away from the situation, and police ended up shooting him”. In response, all four officers fired back.
According to police, several businesses were damaged by protesters and at least three officers were injured.
But the father of the suspect, 18-year-old Tyrone Harris Jr., called the police version of events “a bunch of lies”. Police say he is in critical condition.
The man was taken to a hospital, where Belmar said he was in “critical, unstable” condition.
Hundreds of protesters marked the anniversary of Michael Brown’s death on Saturday, including one group that barbecued a pig onto which they had placed a police hat before offering its roasted head to officers at police headquarters.
“The recent acts of violence will not be tolerated in a community that has worked so tirelessly over the last year to rebuild and become stronger”, he said in the statement”.
Nonetheless, Gaskin says he expects Monday night to be free of reactive violence, thievery and destruction.
Other peaceful events were held to mark the anniversary on Sunday.
NBC also reports that tear gas was used before dawn to disperse protesters on West Florissant Avenue, which has been the front line in many violent demonstrations that rocked Ferguson after Brown’s death.
Demonstrators march along West Florissant Street in the driving rain on August 9. Belmar said none of them were wearing body cameras. They were cited for blocking a roadway.
Belmar, who said he was there when the shots were fired at law enforcement, said the man had fired first at police.
Police said Stokes had a gun and didn’t obey commands to show his hands.
Separately, two teenage males were shot early on Monday in a drive-by attack near a sidewalk shrine erected in Brown’s memory beside the spot where he was killed, but their wounds were not considered life-threatening, police said.
“My son was running to the police to ask for help, and he was shot”, he said.
The St. Louis County Police Department also confirmed that one of their officers was involved in an officer-involved shooting after coming under heavy gunfire.
When the detectives exited the vehicle, Tyrone reportedly continued to fire until the officers struck him multiple times. All four fired back.
Overnight Saturday, a teenager was arrested and charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and one count of resisting arrest, the St. Louis County Police said in a statement.
Several protesters jumped over a barricade around the building and faced off with police officers, although the crowd eventually dispersed without violence.
Brown’s father, Michael Sr., recently opened up about the death of his son, admitting that time has yet to heal the wounds and that his entire family is still in mourning.
